Mrs. Soto has been my daughter’s teacher for the last two years and in that time I have seen my daughter, Adonaya, blossom into a young lady who sees math as a work of art. As someone who is math-insecure, I am thankful to Mrs. Soto for giving my daughter a different experience with math than my own.
My negative schooled experiences taught math as separate from life and self, inflexible with only one answer, like coded language I could not understand or an ivory tower I could not gain access to, so I always felt disconnected to it. However, thanks to Mrs. Soto’s personalized, engaging and relational way of teaching mathematics, Adonaya approaches math equations the way Michelangelo approached his work. It was he who said, “every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” In math, as in art, there’s always something beautiful to behold and it is the challenge of the student to work on it, to chisel away at it, until they’ve discovered it, even if it leads them to more questions and more work.
Every time I see my daughter do math problems on her white board I see more than just someone seeking answers. I recognize an artist at work who’s developing confidence, honing her art, and gaining access to places I long thought were closed to those like me. By mastering the language of math through the discovery of multiple approaches to singular problems and cultivating a connection to math in a way I didn’t know was possible, Adonaya has become indomitable in the face of (math) challenges. Traits such as those, combined with determination, ingenuity and analytical prowess, have been fostered under the tutelage of Mrs. Soto. I am grateful for that and for the many math-rich and positive experiences she’s created for Adonaya. They are enabling my daughter to be more than just math-secure but rather a mathematician - one who is a lifelong learner and lover of math.

I know Stephanie Soto as a both a colleague and a client. Ms. Soto and I taught at Constitution High School together for three years. After observing Ms. Soto’s ability to help students of all ability levels succeed in mathematics with her clear instructional approach, I knew she would be a wonderful math tutor when my own son needed supplemental math instruction. As my son entered the third grade it was evident that he lacked a solid grasp of the basic fundamentals of addition and subtraction. I knew that my son would have to take standardized tests for the first time and feared that he would fall behind in his overcrowded class. I reached out to Ms. Soto to re-teach the concepts he needed help in and prepare him for multiplication, division, fractions and basic geometry and measurement. In short, we needed to cover 2 year of math in a six month span—a major challenge for any child, but with the skillful instruction and efforts of Ms. Soto, I observed a total transformation of my son’s math abilities! He not only quickly grasped math concepts, he became much more confident in his math abilities, and most importantly, he developed a passion for learning math! Now my son is one of the highest achieving students in his class in math! He can do rapid equations and multi-step operations. He understands and can explain math concepts! I am so pleased that Ms. Soto has helped my son reach his full potential as a student.
